When Link comes by, Groose starts to insult Link for making the knights look bad until Zelda arrives to the scene. Zelda tells Groose to back off, and Groose's nose starts steaming once he sees how pretty Zelda is.
He and his gang leap onto their Loftwing. He comments that Link cannot do things without Zelda's help. Then, Groose states that he will claim that sailcloth from Zelda and that Zelda and he will have a special moment alone. Unbeknownst to Groose, Zelda overhears Groose's ambitions and demands an explanation.
Groose quickly makes up a lie and leaves the scene. During the Wing Ceremony race, Groose and his gang try to prevent Link from capturing the golden bird by resorting to dirty tricks such as chucking eggs. After the events of Zelda's disappearance, Groose is seen moping in his room with Cawlin looking after him.
When Link attempts dive towards Sacred Grounds for the second time after searching for Zelda in three areas, Groose follows Link.
He grabs Link and pulls him down. On the ground, Groose is amazed with the scenery and the birds. He named this land, Grooseland, and he goes off to find the old lady. In the old temple, Groose is angry with the old lady when she says it's only Link's destiny to save Zelda. He sees Link and finds the talks of destiny and Link being the great hero unbelievable. If you hit the bag you'll also always be sent sprawling on the floor, possibly hinting at how much stronger Groose is than Link.
As previously mentioned Skyward Sword's Skyloftian population seems to have avian-inspired names as well as characteristics; with Gully, Pipin, and Piper all being named after small shorebirds. Groose is believed to be a play on words with Goose which we all already know to be among the feistiest of the bird world, but the similarities don't end there.
Skyward Sword is chronologically the first game in the franchise , giving us a lot of background on what would be revealed in later titles. One theory that persists from this is that Groose may actually be an ancestor of the Gerudo people. Groose's red hair, dark skin, and bright yellow eyes all resemble the Gerudo we see in Ocarina of Time and Breath of the Wild. This could mean that Ganondorf was a descendant of Groose, as well as both of them being one of the only male Gerudo to be born every years.
Groose's musical theme is one of the most memorable in the franchise, even going on to become its own meme. But for those Zelda fans experiencing deja-vu, you'd be right in thinking this isn't the first time you heard it. This poses the question of whether this is an easter egg within the timeline, or a tune just simply too good not to use twice. In Skyloft it is a custom and tradition for children to meet their destined Loftwing under the statue of the Goddess Hylia. After Demise's defeat, they all return to the present, where Groose is surprised to find that "Grannie" is revealed to have been Impa all along.
The Old Woman then disappears, much to Groose's sadness. In an end credits scene, Groose can be seen returning to Skyloft with Cawlin and Strich and waving goodbye to Link and Zelda, who have chosen to remain on The Surface. Spoiler warning : Spoilers end here.
As many residents of Skyloft seem to be named after birds, it is possible that Groose is named after the goose. It is also possible that he is named after grouse , an order of bird, which is spelled as "groose" in Scotland, or Grus, the Latin name for cranes.
