This is Those Certain Songs. These guys were everywhere back then and then just kind of faded away. Fast forward to and lead singer Colin Hay would make a short come back via the most unlikely of places, a tv series called Scrubs.

I had loved Men at Work for as long as I could remember. While I was much more familiar with their hit songs, I still found their tunes to be delightful and pretty deep when you got down to it. Overkill had always been a favorite of mine but I never fully realized just how impactful it was until I heard Colin Hay sing this stripped down acoustic version.

There is a subtle magic in both his guitar picking and his soulfull voice that just fills me with a sense of calm and appreciation for what he is trying to say. What is that exactly? Well, to me, a person who suffers from Anxiety and Depression, it is about those quiet nights where all of your fears and anxieties just keep you from falling asleep. While you know, deep in your heart, that your fears are probably unfounded, there are nights that the demons in your head just will not stop.

Sometimes they tell you how useless you think you are, or they tell you you messed something up that day that will destroy everything you built for yourself and your family.

Other times they remind you of something that happened years ago and cause you to relive that single moment of fear, embarrassment or even sorrow. No matter what it is, your mind likes to screw with you sometimes and the only way you can put an end to it is to remind yourself that it is indeed, just Overkill. That is exactly what this song reminds me. That, no matter how many things I am stressing about, no matter how many worries I may have, much of those things that keep me up at night are just in my head.

I am not sure who said it, but it is so very true. Worrying is just making up things that might happen, not necessarily things that will happen. Colin Hay is an incredible singer songwriter and, man I highly recommend his work, especially his solo albums.

You can find this album here with an incredible acoustic version of Down Under as well.
